Santa with Candles © 2004 by Cindy Trombley Paint Palette: Deco Art Americana Khaki Tan Mississippi Mud Shading Flesh Burnt Umber Gooseberry Pink Hauser Medium Green Base Flesh Olive Green Light Buttermilk Evergreen Uniform Blue Country Red Moon Yellow Antique White Burnt Orange Buttermilk Delta Perm-enamel Clear Gloss Glaze Supplies: 1 pint, flat bottle (found at flea markets and garage sales) 6” and 1” fabric strip Stencil brushes Bottle Prep. Remove any labels by soaking in warm soapy dish water for about 20 minutes. Make sure jug is dry before going on to the next step. Spray paint the jug with any brand light colored spray paint. Start with light coats. Let dry in-between each coat. Continue to spray paint until jug is completely covered so you cannot see through it. Base entire bottle with Khaki Tan. Top rim base with Hauser Medium Green. add Country Red vertical and horizontal stripes. Float top and bottom of rim with Evergreen. narrow rim under Hauser Medium Green rim, base with Burnt Orange. Add Moon Yellow vertical lines about 1/4” apart. Santa’s face: base with Base Flesh. Shade around top and sides of face with Shading Flesh. Pounce on cheeks with Gooseberry Pink. Add a Light Buttermilk dot to center of each. Eyes line in with Black. Nose float top with Shading Flesh. Hair base in with Light Buttermilk. Stroke it on with a small round brush. Beard and mustache: base with Uniform Blue Paint a Light Buttermilk wash over the Uniform Blue. Transfer all the beard and mustache lines onto the beard and mustache. Float Light Buttermilk next to all lines. On other side of lines lightly float Uniform Blue. Pine wreath on head, line in with Evergreen, Hauser Medium Green and Olive Greend. Dot on red berries with Country Red. Add a tiny Light Buttermilk dot to each berry. Candles: base with Antique White. Wax: base with Buttermilk. Shade under wax onto candles with Mississippi Mud. Add a line of Mississippi Mud at top of wax as shown on pattern. With stencil brush, dry brush with Light Buttermilk where flames will be painted on. This will give the candles a glowing look. Wicks, paint in with Black. Flames: base with Moon Yellow. Float Burnt Orange at bottom of flame. Add a thin line of White to each flame. Float around entire design with Burnt Umber. Also float Burnt Umber at bottom of bottle, sides of bottle and under rim. Spatter entire bottle with Burnt Umber, using an old toothbrush or spattering tool. With a foam brush apply the Delta Perm Enamel Clear Gloss Glaze to entire jug. Before Antiquing bottle make sure the Clear Gloss Glaze has dried completely. Antiquing bottle: Put a dab of the Burnt Umber oil paint onto a page 3 styro-foam meat tray, or plastic bowl, that you can throw away. Add a small amount of turpentine and mix the two until you have a soupy consistency. Have two clean paper towels or rags next to your work area. Take one clean towel and dip it into the turpentine mixture. Wipe onto bottle. Take the other clean towel and wipe off what you just put on there. Keep repeating this process until you get your bottle to look the way you want it to. You don't need to seal the bottle with anything after you antique it. After Bottle is completely dry, fold fabric strip in half lengthwise and tie around rim of jar. |
